How to Start a Magazine in 6 Steps

Starting a magazine isn’t as difficult as you’d think. I’ve begun several myself and successfully printed them for several years. Make no mistake, it’s hard work, but in the event, it is possible to meet a few important requirements you may get your magazine off the floor.

1) You want a little money to do so – Each business start-up requires some magazines and capital are not any different. Just as a few hundred dollars will probably operate (not like your printing costs) to receive your first problem on the roads and/or newsstands. For a projected higher-finish publication, you will need tens of thousands of dollars determined by what market you’re entering and how big you’re going straight off the bat. The key is to learn the skills you will need to print and do the jobs yourself rather than hire an office filled with employees and self-explanatory (I’ll hit on these skills in a moment and talk more about money in a minute).

2) Equipment – At least one great computer capable of operating the various applications you may need (Adobe InDesign and at least Adobe Photoshop), a fantastic digital SLR camera such as the Nikon D50 which runs about $750, a telephone and a reliable vehicle.

3) The ability to market – Magazines large and little runoff of yours and advertisements will be no different. I can’t stress enough how important it is to get a solid sales plan in place before you take on this endeavor. I’ll talk more about promoting further along.

4) Creativity – You can not survive without offering something new to your readers in an attractive package and for this being creative is a necessity. You probably have an idea about which sort of magazine that you wish to print but from here you want to construct some simple framework.

Decide on a name for your magazine carefully, ensure that you aren’t stepping on anybody’s signature by looking at the US trademark database. Your site’s domain name is also something to consider when choosing your name. Look for open domains that fit your magazine’s name as closely as you can. It’s fine to use a few sudo-odd takes on domain names for magazines such as Register your domain and get in touch with an internet development company that you like to start work in your magazine’s new site.

I personally enjoy 22 Creative as they specialize in sites for magazines. Your website doesn’t have to be awesome right from the gate, just something professional that’s clear about who you are and what your book is all about – expect to spend anywhere from a couple of hundred dollars to tens of thousands here.

A website is a critical part of this process, however, don’t skip out on this one. Alright, you have a name and a website, what is next? Determine what you will have in your first issue by writing out an editorial outline. Fancy name but in fact, just write out what you would like to feature, how many pages you need to dedicate to each item and the number of pages for ads that you would like to pay away (this will depend on the number of ads you market on your first issue).

You don’t need a 100-page book you’re first going around so, determined by what your opponents do, aim for about 50 pages to get a neighborhood or lifestyle magazine and 90 for a magazine that you need to distribute on national information stands.

Measure #2 – It’s Time to Generate Content Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need an army of journalists’ to print your first issue. I’ve produced content for countless publications or with the support of just a couple of people, it isn’t that hard. Begin with item number one in your editorial outline.

Compose your text, making sure to follow basic guidelines for writing an editorial (Google search it for tons of aid ). Decide on the number of pictures you will need for the item and whether you can take the photos yourself or if you will need to purchase them/license them If you can take yourself, head out and start snapping. Take clear, in-focus pictures and take plenty of them. You don’t want to need to go back and re-shoot anything because you didn’t get the shot.

Also, set your camera to shoot 300dpi pictures, normal smaller resolution pictures won’t work and will appear pixilated in the last product – nothing comes off as more newcomer Remember if you have some people in your photos, make them sign a’ model release’ letting you use their image in your book. If you will need to purchase an image from a stock photo site, ensure you purchase a 300dpi image that’s acceptable for printing.

Expect to pay anywhere from $3 – $10 for every photo, if you encounter a site that charges more, you would be overpaying. When you’ve knocked out your editorial, sleep on it and go on it. How many magazines have you noticed that regurgitate the same tired’electronics attributes’ of iPhones and a few sillies whatever that not a lot of folks care about? Lots.

You’ve got to get a new spin on things if you wish to see issue number 2, 3, 54, etc.. New publishers frequently fall into the trap of merely focusing on the creative side of this magazine rather than the sales. As an independent writer, you must wear both hats. Begin by putting together a media kit for your new magazine. A media kit is a few pages, published out that behave as a resume to your magazine featuring all the specifics of that your magazine is for, how many you publish, your distribution strategies, what advertisements you provide and how much they cost, etc.. Initially most of your sales won’t be due to your media kit, this is merely a vital thing to have to leave with potential advertisers.

I could go on and on about how to market advertisements for new magazines but if you read it, you may need to send me a fairly major check as that is closely held information from all in the industry. What I will tell you is beginning with a strategy; call on advertisers which make sense for your magazine. It’s a waste of time to attempt to sell an ad to Budweiser if you’re a new magazine that’s about quilting – it is simply not going to happen. Place yourself in that business owner’s shoes, would you believe it?

You would like to sell ads to pay the bills and recoup your investment and reside. That means cost your ad offerings in fact. For an idea of what’s, try and find out what similar magazines in your market are charging. Don’t go too low in your pricing however, believe in the value of your magazine – giving it away free practically guarantees future collapse. I know of one magazine which just kept throwing money at itself, beginning in new markets without being profitable in one and also to seem successful, they gave away.

A few years later and it’s well known in the media buying business that nobody pays for advertisements in that magazine. If a possible advertiser says they need it for less than you would like to sell it for, pass on them and return to them in a month or two after you’re able to establish a stronger value to warrant your charge card. There are a gazillion different ways to do this but it all begins with you providing a strong, readable book in time.

The old under-promise and over-deliver adage work nicely here. The layout is barely ever satisfying, the first issue I ever designed took me about 72 hours of work with about 6 hours of sleep during that period – not precisely what I call an awesome good time. Be sure to understand how to use your software BEFORE you will need to begin laying out your bar. Pretty much the entire free world uses Adobe InDesign to design their magazines.

It’s a reliable and simple to use program that will run you around $650 unless you can get a deal. You need to seriously think about buying one of Adobe’s Creative Suites that packs InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. These three programs will take you everywhere you need to go in publishing since I have been relying on them for several years. Yes, that is some expensive software but it is essential and well worth the cost if you’re seriously interested in doing this right.

If you flip through a random magazine here and there, you’ll discover that a good deal of them have an inconsistent design throughout the book, meaning that the fonts and If this appeals to you knock yourself out, just know it is not a good practice to follow. You will need to aim for a balanced stream with your designs. The first page of articles should be very near the last page, not stray too far in between. Use a text font at or over 8 points rather than smaller. Do not forget those images, lots and lots of pictures. Learn how to use Photoshop to clean your photos up.
